Marid Castle in Dumat al-Jandal in Al-Jawf, in the north of the Kingdom, is one of the most prominent ancient architectural sites, and its construction is believed to date back to before the Common Era.
It lies about 50 km from the city of Sakaka and was built of stone.
The castle consists of a wall with several observation openings and several towers 12 metres high. The castle contains deep wells and quarters for guarding, shooting and observation. The castle withstood and repelled the invasion of Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra, and parts of it have preserved their cohesion throughout the ages. Marid Castle was mentioned in one of the poems of the Prophet's poet (peace be upon him), Hassan ibn Thabit (Qasr Dumah).
