This castle is known as the Kasbah of Sohar. It is located on the coast, overlooking the sea and the Wilayat of Sohar.
The castle was surrounded by a fortified wall and circular towers. The largest tower occupies the northern corner of the castle, while beside the entrance a fortified stronghold was built containing five openings designated for cannons.
The main building is rectangular in shape and consists of three floors, its exterior walls coated with white lime. Sunlight filters in to illuminate the rooms of the upper floor through windows fitted with wooden shutters mounted on arched openings.
Some historical sources indicate that Sohar Fort was built during the era of Uman bin Qahtan in the first century CE, while other sources suggest that its construction dates to the era of Malik bin Fahm Al-Azdi, and a third source attributes it to Al-Julanda bin Al-Mustakbir. Archaeological excavations were carried out inside Sohar Fort and around it, revealing a settlement dating back to the pre-Islamic period. These discoveries in the settlement indicated that Sohar was a prominent commercial center, as trade seals were found along with well-made red pottery that was imported from India in the second and third centuries CE, in addition to black ceramics that were imported from China.
