Statement by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) on the Occasion of World Teachers' Day 2025

The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) celebrates World Teachers' Day on the fifth of October each year, together with various international and regional organizations, as a contribution to valuing the vital and pivotal role played by the teacher and to enhancing their standing, stemming from its awareness of the importance of the teacher as a fundamental pillar for achieving quality education and the goals of sustainable development.

On this occasion, ALECSO affirms that this day is not merely a symbolic occasion, but rather a renewed opportunity to shed light on the pivotal role that the teacher plays in shaping the future, forming awareness, and instilling the values of citizenship and humanity. The teacher is not merely a transmitter of knowledge, but the one who awakens the mind, refines the soul, and shapes character. The teacher is the one who plants the seeds of self-belief in the hearts of the coming generations, ignites the spark of curiosity and discovery, and leads them with steady steps toward the horizons of knowledge and wisdom.

This annual celebration of the teacher comes today in an era of accelerating technological transformations, the spread of artificial intelligence tools, an intense explosion of knowledge, and the shift of education from classrooms to open digital spaces, making the teaching profession more complex and profound. This is bound to push human societies to reformulate the concepts of education and knowledge, and to reflect on developing the teacher's responsibilities and their educational and pedagogical tasks. There is no doubt that these profound transformations in all fields of life push everyone today, more than ever before, to support the teacher and enhance their standing within society so that they remain faithful to their message, able to keep pace with the times, a facilitator and guide, and a designer of inspiring learning experiences.

In support of these newly emerging roles entrusted today to the teacher in the twenty-first century, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization, together with all other international bodies and regional and global organizations, calls for intensifying intellectual efforts, developing national educational options, strategic and systematic investment, building community partnerships, and adopting supportive and stimulating policies to develop the teaching profession, respect the teacher's dignity, and enhance their social standing.

Out of the belief of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) in its strategic Arab role in strengthening human efforts to modernize the teaching profession and further value the teacher's standing, it contributes through all its programs and projects in the educational field to:

  • Setting standards for developing educational policies in the Arab countries and facilitating their adoption, supported by recommendations concerning teachers' rights and responsibilities in order to improve their professional and social conditions.
  • Supporting the formulation of national policies and providing advice and technical support in order to develop comprehensive and successful educational plans that place the teacher at their core.
  • Recalling the need to address the global shortage in the number of teachers (44 million teachers needed by 2030 according to UNESCO's latest estimates) and offering concrete recommendations to improve the attractiveness of the profession and encourage young people to join it.
  • Professional development and capacity building by formulating qualification plans and implementing continuous professional training programs for teachers and practitioners in multiple fields, including education planning, curriculum development, and confronting digital transformations and artificial intelligence while preserving the human dimension of education.
  • Strengthening Arab efforts to exchange knowledge and best practices and holding regional meetings, consultations, and dialogue forums to exchange ideas and experiences among the Arab countries on best practices related to teacher issues and placing them in the context of national characteristics.
  • Providing support to teachers working in displacement and crisis environments, through specialized programs focusing on the teacher's well-being and professional development in those difficult circumstances.
  • Providing technological support in times of crisis and contributing to the success of the digital transformations witnessed by the Arab countries.
  • Contributing to spreading a culture of awareness and recognition of the teacher's standing through celebrations, seminars, and conferences that make the teacher their central focus, and awarding prizes to appreciate and encourage distinguished teachers.

Based on this comprehensive vision, and in celebration of World Teachers' Day, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization extends its highest expressions of congratulations, respect, and appreciation to all teachers, and expresses its commitment to developing education, modernizing teachers' skills, and valuing their societal standing.
