About the Center

The Arab Center for Arabization, Translation, Authorship and Publication in Damascus is a specialized body of the Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Science (ALECSO). It was established under the agreement concluded between the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic and the Organization. It enjoys legal personality and pursues its objectives and performs its functions within the framework of the Charter of Arab Cultural Unity and the Constitution of the Organization. The Organization's Executive Council defined its objectives and functions by its Resolution No. (M T/D 50/Q 6 B) of 1990.

The objectives of the Center are as follows:

  • Supporting the Arabization of higher and university education in all its branches and fields across the Arab world, including meeting Arabization needs in references, books, studies, research and abstracts — through translation, authorship, publication and distribution — and cooperating with the competent bodies, including the Organization's Bureau for the Coordination of Arabization, the Arabic language academies, research centres, the Association of Arab Universities and all other relevant Arab and international parties.
  • Keeping track of new works published in the fields of scientific, literary and artistic knowledge worldwide, making them known, and selecting the finest and most suitable of them for Arabization.
  • Coordinating the translation and authorship efforts undertaken in the Arab world and stimulating the exchange of expertise and publications among Arab institutions active in this field.
  • Conducting educational surveys, research and studies on higher education issues and coordinating among its institutions in order to improve its internal and external efficiency and to strengthen the link between it and development in the Arab world.
  • Enriching Arab culture by Arabizing the finest masterpieces of world thought in the sciences, letters and arts, and rendering into Arabic those works not yet translated.
  • Establishing various forms of cooperation with Arab universities, ministries of higher education and scientific research, and other relevant bodies in the Arab countries in order to Arabize education therein.
  • Organizing and taking part in joint Arab and international conferences, seminars, research symposia and workshops to address matters related to the Arabization of higher education in the Arab world, in a way that serves Arab integration scientifically, culturally, economically and developmentally.
  • Working to make use of the research of Arab scholars and students inside and outside the Arab world, and contributing to the translation of summaries and abstracts of their theses and studies according to their practical relevance to integrated Arab development projects.
  • Establishing an information bank in the field of the Center's objectives, aims and activities.
  • Publishing a scholarly periodical that addresses the topics within the Center's remit and introduces its activities and projects.
