ALECSO Director-General participates in the General Assembly of the States Parties to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 

 

H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, took part, on June 17, 2026, in the 10th  session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The session is being held at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris, with wide participation from representatives of Member States and international and regional organizations, along with cultural heritage experts.

ALECSO’s participation is part of its ongoing efforts to support Arab countries in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, enhancing the presence of Arab heritage elements on international lists, and developing national capacities in terms of inventorying, documentation, and preparation of nomination files in accordance with approved international standards.

In his interventions, the Director-General emphasized the importance of pursuing international and regional efforts to safeguard intangible cultural heritage as a fundamental pillar of cultural diversity and societal cohesion. He highlighted the need to strengthen the participation of local communities and heritage bearers in various safeguarding and protection programs.

This participation reaffirms ALECSO’s commitment to its leading role in serving Arab culture and  supporting Arab countries in implementing the provisions of the 2003 Convention, thereby contributing to the preservation of Arab cultural heritage and its transmission to future generations, as well as enhancing its presence and visibility at both regional and international levels.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, the Director-General held a series of meetings with a number of officials, experts, and representatives of Member States. Discussions addressed ways to strengthen cooperation in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, and promote the exchange of expertise and successful experiences. They also explored mechanisms to support Arab initiatives aimed at protecting cultural heritage and enhancing its role in achieving sustainable development and reinforcing cultural identity.
