ALECSO holds a workshop in the field of establishing geoparks in the Republic of Yemen

ALECSO (Department of Science and Scientific Research) in cooperation with the Yemeni National Committee for Education, Culture and Science and the Yemeni National Committee for Geoparks, organized a workshop on “Supporting the nomination of the Aden Peninsula as a geopark”, on September 30 and October 1, 2025, in the city of Aden. At the opening of the workshop, Mr. Awad Mujbar, Deputy Governor of Aden for Education Affairs, stressed the importance of the project to stimulate tourism and confirm the status and importance of the historical city of Aden. For its part, Dr. Hafizah Nasser Al-Sheikh, Secretary-General of the Yemeni National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, stressed the necessity of completing this file through supporting the relevant authorities and making more efforts to register the Aden Peninsula on the list of global geoparks. The organization’s speech was delivered by Mr. Amin Al-Dahmani - Project Coordinator at ALECSO, in which he pointed out the importance of this project within the framework of the Arab strategy for scientific research and sustainable development, stressing the importance of the Aden Peninsula Geological Park project because of the contents it contains. Unique geological formations and its role in achieving sustainable development by preserving natural heritage, promoting the local economy, and developing scientific tourism, which will put the Republic of Yemen on the global map as a distinguished scientific destination and open new horizons for international cooperation in the field of earth sciences. This workshop aims primarily to support the registration of the Aden Peninsula on the UNESCO World List of Geoparks by building Yemeni national capacities in preparing geopark registration files, and raising community and scientific awareness of the importance of geological heritage and biological diversity on the peninsula. Aden, and highlighting its role in promoting environmental and geological tourism as an economic resource that contributes to sustainable development, and encouraging community participation in protecting and preserving this natural heritage.  The scientific event also witnessed the participation of experts from the University of Aden, in addition to representatives of a number of ministries, the Public Authority for Environmental Protection, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Yemeni Engineers Syndicate, in addition to civil society organizations.
