Rabat hosts the specialized Arab symposium to unify archiving and documentation terminology

 On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at its headquarters in Rabat, the Arabization Coordination Office of the Arab Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) hosted the specialized Arab symposium for unifying archiving and documentation terminology, as part of its ongoing efforts to unify the Arabic terminology and promote terminological harmony in various fields and specializations of knowledge. This specific symposium comes in the context of a joint lexicographic project between the Arabization Coordination Office and the Supreme Council for the Arabic Language in the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, which aims to prepare a unified Arabic dictionary for the field of archiving and documentation, taking into account the specificities of this vital field and keeping pace with its scientific and technical developments. The idea of ​​the project came based on a recommendation issued by “Arab Document Day,” organized by the Information, Documentation and Translation Department of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, which called for the need to develop a unified dictionary of concepts and terminology related to documentation and archiving, in a way that enhances the protection of Arab institutional memory and supports digital transformation in the field of document management. The symposium was a turning point in the process of reviewing and reviewing the contents of the dictionary, as a group of experts and specialists from Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Yemen, Belgium, and Mauritania, along with two representatives of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States and the Supreme Council of the Arabic Language in Algeria, discussed the list of proposed terms and their definitions according to unified scientific standards. The opening session began with a speech by His Excellency the Director General of ALECSO, Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, delivered on his behalf by the Director of the Office, Dr. Murad Al-Rifi, followed by a speech by Dr. Hanaa Asfour, representative of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, and then a speech by Dr. Salah Belaid, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for the Arabic Language in Algeria, delivered on his behalf by Professor Hanisa Kashi, remotely. The participants stressed in their speeches the importance of this dictionary in preserving the common Arab memory and promoting professional and cognitive integration in the field of archiving and documentation, especially in light of the digital transformations witnessed by documentary institutions. The symposium witnessed rich scientific sessions, with the participation of an elite group of professors and experts, including: Professor Iman Al-Nasr, Dr. Ahmed Qadim, Dr. Mohamed Ezzat Amna, Dr. Samira bin Abdel-Wahab, Dr. Hamid Al-Awadi, Dr. Shakib Al-Shairi, Dr. Islamo Ould Sidi Ahmed, where the field was reviewed.
