On the occasion of the International Day of Sign Languages, observed annually on 23 September following its proclamation by the United Nations General Assembly, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) and the Beijing Normal University organized, on 23 September 2026, an international event—via Zoom—under the theme “One World, Shared Humanity”.

The event brought together prominent experts, researchers, and specialists from around the world to discuss “Sign Languages, Disability, and Digital Technologies” and explore the latest research, issues, and practical approaches related to the use of AI and digital technologies to enhance sign language services, promote inclusive education, advance digital accessibility, and support the rights of persons with disabilities and their and full participation in society.

The Conference provided a platform for international dialogue and the exchange of expertise across sectors, while exploring ways to harness digital technologies to foster equitable participation, ensure inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education, and build more inclusive societies, particularly for deaf and hard-of-hearing persons.

A key highlight of the event was the launch of the global sign language video “One World, Shared Humanity,” featuring contributions from several Arab countries and China. Participants conveyed a shared message in their respective national sign languages, reflecting linguistic and cultural diversity and affirming that differences in languages and modes of communication do not prevent the unity of humanity.

The Conference was organized as part of cooperation between the Beijing Normal University and ALECSO, with the participation of several international institutions and partners, including the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia and the ICHARA Association, along with experts, researchers, and specialists in special education, artificial intelligence, sign languages, and digital accessibility.
