Culture department The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) participated today, Saturday 11 July 2026, in the city of Tripoli in the opening events of the "Libyan Cultural Season" organized by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development of the State of Libya during the period from 11-14 July 2026, in celebration of Libyan cultural diversity and in tribute to creativity and creators in the State of Libya. This took place with broad Arab participation, and within the framework of the "Return to Life" initiative adopted by the Libyan Government of National Unity.
In his opening address on this occasion, His Excellency Mr. Salem Mustafa Al-Alem, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development of the State of Libya, explained that culture is neither an intellectual luxury nor a seasonal activity, but rather a soft power that shapes awareness, protects identity, and builds the individual capable of making the future. He explained that the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development of the State of Libya will make this season a unique annual event to honour creativity and creators, and to formulate a unified vision for Libyan cultural action at the local, Arab, and international levels.
His Excellency also explained that this orientation gains greater brilliance and firmness this year on the occasion of the selection of Benghazi as the Capital of Arab Culture 2026, which confirms that the State of Libya has been and will remain a beacon of cultural radiance and an active element in its regional and Arab surroundings thanks to its creators, intellectuals, and artists.
On the occasion of this unique cultural event – the Libyan Cultural Season – His Excellency the Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development announced that the events celebrating the city of Benghazi as the Capital of Arab Culture for the year 2026 will launch from the city of Benghazi on 16 September 2026, coinciding with the ninety-fifth (95th) anniversary of the death of the sheikh of martyrs, the mujahid Sheikh Omar Al-Mukhtar, and will conclude on 24 December 2026, coinciding with the seventy-fifth (75th) anniversary of the Libyan National Independence Day, explaining that all cultural events to be held in the State of Libya will be under the umbrella of celebrating the city of Benghazi as the Capital of Arab Culture for the year 2026.
At the conclusion of the opening session of the "Libyan Cultural Season", the Director of the Culture Department at ALECSO, Dr. Hamid Bin Saif Al-Noufali, presented copies of the book on plastic art in the State of Libya to His Excellency the Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, Mr. Salem Al-Alem. The book was authored under the supervision of ALECSO within the framework of the series of books on plastic art in the Arab countries.
The sessions and events of the Libyan Cultural Season continue over four days within a rich and diverse cultural programme that combines intellectual symposia, critical lectures, literary meetings, and poetry evenings, as well as honouring creativity and creators in the various fields and domains of culture and art.
