Department of Science and Scientific Research The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (Science and Scientific Research Department) held, on 5 February 2026, a virtual meeting on "Rooting and updating the Arab scientific heritage." The organization of this meeting comes within the framework of the Organization's endeavor to encourage innovation based on scientific research, to transform its outputs into applied solutions, and to open horizons of cooperation among universities, research centers and institutions concerned with the Arab scientific heritage. In addition to contributing to linking contemporary scientific theories with the Arab scientific heritage, and developing them on scientific foundations that contribute to enhancing research capacities. This falls within the activity of the Science and Scientific Research Department entitled "Rooting and updating the Arab scientific heritage."
This meeting was supervised by Professor Dr. Mohamed Sanad Abu Darwish, Director of the Science and Scientific Research Department, who delivered a framing presentation in which he addressed the background of the activity, its strategic objectives, its anticipated outputs, and what it aspires to in terms of an actual contribution to restoring the standing of the Arab scientific heritage and linking it with contemporary scientific research issues. The meeting witnessed the participation of specialized experts and researchers from various Arab countries.
The participants' interventions revolved around the importance of highlighting the Arab scientific heritage as a fundamental pillar of human civilization, and the necessity of reviving and valorizing it through further documentation and scientific analysis, with emphasis on highlighting its original contributions to the development of modern sciences. Emphasis was also placed on the necessity of linking Arab scientific theories and works with their direct contributions to vital contemporary fields, especially the natural and applied sciences, among them medicine, engineering, agriculture, astronomy, chemistry, and physics.
The participants in the meeting also pointed to the importance of enhancing awareness of the value of this heritage among researchers and scholars, and of working to develop university curricula by integrating components of the Arab scientific heritage into educational programs, whether at the university level or in the early stages, in a manner that contributes to building a civilizational scientific awareness among the young.
The participants also addressed the pivotal role that digital transformation can play in serving the Arab scientific heritage, through digitizing it, analyzing its contents, facilitating access to it, and developing mechanisms for harnessing it in scientific research and education, with the aim of enhancing the capacities of researchers in Arab research centers and bodies, and linking the scientific facts contained in the scientific heritage, particularly in the fields of applied and natural sciences, using modern techniques and building upon them in developing research paths in the most prominent scientific fields, including the medical, physical and engineering sciences.
At the conclusion of the meeting, it was agreed to form a scientific committee comprising a number of the participating experts, which would undertake to hold a series of specialized scientific meetings, dedicated to developing the concepts of the Arab scientific heritage, and to putting in place practical applied programs for building Arab capacities in the fields of teaching the scientific heritage at the level of Arab universities
