The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) attaches special importance to protecting cultural heritage in the Arab countries and to harnessing modern technologies to safeguard it. It works to coordinate among the Arab states, and between them and the rest of the world's countries, in the various fields of preserving cultural heritage and employing it in development. Within this framework, since its establishment the Organization has consistently held the Conference on Antiquities and Cultural Heritage in the Arab World once every two years, with the participation of those responsible for its management and a number of Arab and international experts, to exchange experiences on the session's main theme, propose strategies and policies capable of preserving heritage assets and managing them efficiently, and employing them within the comprehensive and sustainable development system in the Arab countries. Among its most important objectives

  • Supporting joint Arab cultural action in the field of heritage preservation.
  • Completing a joint Arab project.
  • Coordinating among the bodies responsible for managing cultural heritage in the Arab states.
  • Encouraging and supporting archaeological and heritage research and studies in the Arab countries.
  • Activating the Arab strategy for preserving heritage assets and integrating it into the sustainable development system. It is also expected to have objectives, the most important of which are
  • Inventorying the cultural heritage in the Arab states, documenting it and disseminating it.
  • Urging states to ratify international conventions, particularly the convention on combating the illicit trafficking of heritage (the 1970 UNESCO Convention) and the convention of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law.
  • Building Arab capacities in all fields of heritage preservation and valorization.
  • Communication among experts to exchange views and experiences through the interactive electronic platform via the conference's website.
