Qatar is an Arab Gulf state located in the east of the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia, overlooking the Arabian Gulf, with its capital being Doha. It shares a land border to the south with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and maritime borders with the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain. Following Ottoman rule, Qatar became a British protectorate in the early twentieth century until it gained independence in 1971. Qatar has been ruled by the Al Thani family since the mid-nineteenth century after a short period. It has been a member of ALECSO since 1971.
