Egypt is a transcontinental Arab country, extending over the northeastern corner of Africa and the southwestern corner of Asia by a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula. Its population is estimated at more than 119 million inhabitants, making it the thirteenth most populous country in the world, and the most populous Arab and Middle Eastern country. It is bordered to the north by the Mediterranean Sea, to the south by Sudan, to the east by the Red Sea, to the northeast by Palestine (Israel) and the Gaza Strip, and to the west by Libya. The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) is the mother of specialized Arab organizations and the oldest. It was established on July 25, 1970, following the approval of the Arab Cultural Unity Charter in Baghdad in April 1964.
